A guide to dark roast coffee

What dark roast means

A darker roast is taken further, developing deep, roasty flavours and a fuller body while mellowing acidity. Roast character starts to lead over origin character, giving the bold, chocolatey, low-acid cup many people associate with a strong coffee. At Zenforest our darkest coffees sit around medium-dark, deep and rich but still clean rather than burnt.

Why it suits milk

Because dark roasts are bold and full-bodied, they hold their own against steamed milk instead of disappearing into it — which is exactly why they’re the classic choice for lattes and cappuccinos.

How to brew it

Dark and medium-dark roasts shine through espresso and moka pot, where their body and depth concentrate beautifully, and in a French press for a rich, full cup. Use slightly cooler water than for lighter roasts to avoid drawing out bitterness.

Our darkest coffees

Our darkest coffee is the Cappuccino Blend — roasted dark and bold specifically to carry through steamed milk in cappuccinos and lattes. If you like a strong, low-acid cup built for milk, start here.
