A guide to Indian specialty coffee
The story of Indian coffee
Coffee has grown in India for centuries, but its specialty scene is a more recent, exciting story. India’s coffee is almost all shade-grown — cultivated under a canopy of native trees, often intercropped with pepper, cardamom, and other spices. That shade slows ripening and, many argue, lends Indian coffee its characteristic smoothness. Today a new generation of estates is pushing quality and experimenting with process, putting Indian specialty coffee firmly on the world map.
Where it’s grown
The heart of Indian specialty coffee is the Western Ghats, and within it the Karnataka regions of Coorg (Kodagu) and Chikkamagaluru. Our estates sit at roughly 3,000–3,900 ft in this belt — high enough for slow, sweet cherry development, and part of one of the planet’s most biodiverse landscapes. Altitude, shade, and monsoon rhythm together shape the cup.
What makes it unique
India gave the world Monsooned Malabar — coffee deliberately exposed to monsoon winds and moisture until it swells and mellows into something bold, nutty, and remarkably low in acidity. It’s a process found nowhere else, and a good example of how India’s coffee has its own identity rather than imitating other origins.
Processing innovation
Beyond monsooning, Indian estates are now experimenting boldly: carbonic maceration and controlled fermentations that build intense fruit character, honey processing that keeps natural sweetness, and barrel ageing that lends coffee notes of oak, spice, and spirit. Many Zenforest coffees — from Banana Fermented to Bourbon Bliss — come from exactly this wave of experimentation.
Arabica and Robusta in India
India grows both Arabica and fine washed Robusta. Arabica gives the sweetness and complexity prized in single origins; India’s high-grown Robusta is unusually clean and is used thoughtfully in blends for body and crema. It’s one reason Indian blends can carry milk drinks so well.
How to choose
If you’re new to Indian coffee, start with a classic like Monsoon Malabar for its bold, low-acid comfort, or an Experience Box to taste the range. From there, explore the fermented and barrel-aged lots that show just how far Indian specialty coffee has come.
