A short guide to buying specialty coffee
What makes coffee “specialty”?
Specialty coffee is graded on a 100-point scale by certified tasters, and only coffee that scores 80 or above qualifies. In practice that means clean, defect-free beans with a clear, distinctive flavour — not the flat, generic taste of commodity coffee. Every Zenforest coffee is specialty-grade and traceable to a single Indian estate, so the flavour in your cup can be tied back to a specific farm, altitude, and processing method.
Which roast level should you buy?
Roast level shapes flavour more than most people expect. Light roasts keep a coffee’s origin character — florals, fruit, and acidity — and suit delicate methods like pour over. Medium roasts balance sweetness and body, making them the most versatile choice and a safe pick if you’re unsure. Medium-dark roasts deepen into chocolate and spice, hold up beautifully to milk, and are ideal for espresso and moka pot. If you drink your coffee black and enjoy brightness, go lighter; if you take it with milk, go a shade darker.
Choosing by brewing method
Match the coffee to how you brew. Pour over and AeroPress reward light, aromatic coffees and show off fruit and florals. French press and moka pot suit fuller-bodied, chocolatey coffees. Espresso works best with medium-roasted coffees that have enough body to carry through milk. Cold brew turns sweeter, lower-acid coffees into a smooth, refreshing glass. Every Zenforest product page lists its recommended methods, so you never have to guess.
Why roast date matters more than “best before”
Coffee is at its best in the weeks just after roasting, not months. A distant “best before” date tells you little; a recent roast date tells you everything. Because we roast to order, your coffee ships days — not months — after roasting. For the best cup, buy little and often, and aim to finish a bag within four to six weeks of the roast date.
How to store your coffee
Keep beans in an airtight container, away from light, heat, and moisture. Don’t refrigerate or freeze opened coffee — the temperature swings pull in moisture and stale odours. Buy whole bean and grind just before brewing where you can; ground coffee stales far faster than whole beans. Stored well, your coffee will taste noticeably better for longer.
Frequently asked questions
Specialty coffee is coffee that scores 80 or above on a 100-point grading scale, judged by certified tasters. It means clean, high-quality beans with a distinct, traceable flavour — a step above everyday commercial coffee.
If you care about flavour, yes. Specialty coffee is fresher, cleaner, and more complex than commodity coffee, and it’s traceable to a specific estate. Brewed well, the difference in the cup is obvious.
Directly from estates in Coorg and Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka, India, grown at roughly 3,000–3,900 ft. Sourcing direct keeps more value with the growers and lets us trace every lot.
We roast to order in small batches, so your coffee ships days after roasting rather than sitting on a shelf. Each bag carries a roast date.
Start with a medium roast — it’s the most forgiving and versatile. Something like Toddy & Toffee or the Cappuccino Blend works well black or with milk. Our sampler box is also a great way to explore.
Yes — we ship pan-India, with free shipping on qualifying orders.
Whole bean, if you have a grinder — coffee stales much faster once ground. If you don’t grind at home, choose your brew method at checkout and we’ll grind to match.
In an airtight container, away from light, heat, and moisture. Avoid the fridge or freezer once the bag is opened, and try to finish a bag within four to six weeks of its roast date.
