A short guide to buying coffee beans

Arabica or Robusta?

Arabica beans are sweeter, more complex, and higher in acidity — the choice for specialty coffee. Robusta is bolder, more bitter, higher in caffeine, and prized for crema in espresso and milk drinks. Most Zenforest single origins are Arabica; a few blends add Robusta deliberately for body and crema. If you drink your coffee black, lean Arabica; if you want a punchy espresso base, a little Robusta helps.

Which roast level suits you?

Roast level shapes the cup. Light roasts keep origin character — fruit, florals, acidity — and suit filter and pour over. Medium roasts balance sweetness and body and are the safest all-rounder. Medium-dark roasts turn chocolatey and bold, hold up to milk, and shine in espresso and moka pot. If you are unsure, start medium.

Whole bean or ground?

Whole bean is always fresher — coffee begins to stale within minutes of grinding as it loses aromatics and oxidises. If you own a grinder, buy whole bean and grind just before brewing. If you don’t, choose your brew method at checkout and we’ll grind to the right size for it, from coarse for French press to fine for espresso.

Freshness and roast date

The most important date on a bag of coffee is the roast date, not a distant best-before. Coffee is at its best in the weeks after roasting. Because we roast to order, your beans ship days after roasting. Buy an amount you’ll finish within four to six weeks for the best cup.

Storing your beans

Keep beans airtight, cool, dark, and dry. Avoid the fridge and freezer once opened — condensation and stale odours are the enemy of good coffee. A sealed container in a cupboard is ideal.
